India Public Wi-Fi Users Fall 42.5% in June 2026 Quarter

The number of people using public Wi-Fi in India fell 42.5% to 3 million in the April–June 2026 quarter. It stood at 5.21 million during the same period last year, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Data used on public Wi-Fi also fell 43.2%, from 13,281 TB to 7,541 TB.

The decline continued from the previous quarter. Compared with January–March 2026, the number of users fell 5.5%, while data use dropped 12.1%.

What happened to Wi-Fi hotspots?

India had 55,230 public Wi-Fi hotspots at the end of June 2026. This was 1.8% fewer than in March, but almost unchanged from a year earlier.

The number of Wi-Fi access points also fell 3.9% from last year to 153,950.

Gujarat had the most public Wi-Fi hotspots at 10,460, followed by Maharashtra with 5,140.

Why did hotspot numbers fall earlier?

TRAI linked an earlier sharp fall in hotspot numbers to CSC Wi-Fi Choupal Services India surrendering its internet service provider licence.

The number of hotspots had dropped from 164,800 in September 2024 to 46,880 in December 2024.

TRAI’s state-wise figures show only the number of hotspots. They do not show how many people used them or how much data they consumed in each state.

The report also does not provide June 2026 hotspot figures for Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Ladakh, or Lakshadweep.
