FaceTime Audio Call Not Working

Why is my FaceTime Audio Call Not Working?

There are several culprits for the FaceTime audio stops working issue. Here I pointed out the most common reasons,

  • Incompatibility of the device
  • Older version of the OS
  • Older iPhone model (iPhone 4)
  • 1st Generation iPad
  • Too low volume
  • Malfunctioning or muted microphone
  • Incorrect date and time
  • No internet connection
  • Other apps use the microphone
  • Enabled noise cancellation feature
  • FaceTime scheduled downtime
  • More participants in the group than required
  • Dirt or debris prevents sound from getting through the microphone

How to Troubleshoot FaceTime Audio Call Not Working

I shared 13 solutions in this section. Following all of them is not mandatory. If a solution works for you, proceeding to the next one is unnecessary.

1. Check Compatibility

Did you buy a new iPad or iPhone? Or have you recently changed your carrier/country? Check whether FaceTime works in our current country.

FaceTime is not available worldwide. Are you learning this information for the first time? Yes, I said right. You can’t access FaceTime in some countries, carriers, or regions. Browse Apple’s official website and check whether your current country supports FaceTime.

2. Reboot Your Device

So, you checked the compatibility and are sure that FaceTime is compatible in your current country. Are you still facing the problem? So, you must be thinking of rebooting your device. In fact, this is one of the easiest solutions to this problem.

Once your device is restarted, wait for a couple of minutes. Then launch FaceTime and call someone. Check if the problem is resolved.

3. Is Your Device Volume Kept Lower?

Sometimes we don’t look at the simple solutions and think my FaceTime has a few major problems. Are you not hearing the voice of other people? Let me ask a question. Did you check your device volume?

If your device volume is too low, you will not hear anything from the other person on the call. Increase the audio level through the physical volume button.

4. Is Your Device Microphone Mute?

This is another simple solution to the FaceTime audio not working error. An accidental tap or press on the mute option of FaceTime can cause the issue. Thus, the other person will be unable to hear you.

In order to unmute yourself, press the Mute button at the bottom of the FaceTime video or audio . If you don’t know which button is the microphone option, let me help. The icon with the microphone is the Mute button. Tap it gently and fix the problem.

5. Does the Problem Rely on the Microphone?

Does the problem still exist? If yes, you shouldn’t rule out that the problem can be with the microphone.

Open another audio or video calling app. Call your family or friends. Check and verify whether the microphone is working perfectly.

Important Note:

  • New iPhones have a thin transparent cover over the microphone. Check for the cover and remove it. Sometimes this cover lets users assume that the microphone has serious errors in the audio.

6. Avoid Using Other Apps Running Background

Are there other apps running in the background and using your device’s microphone? This could be responsible for the FaceTime audio not working problem.

Check your device to see if any apps are working in the background, and close the apps. If the apps are not closing, force quit. Generally, music apps are the culprits in this case.

Important Note:

  • Use the privacy features to know which app is using your device microphone.

7. Check Your Device Date & Time

Correct date and time are a must for a FaceTime application to work without trouble. If your device date and time are incorrect, be sure, FaceTime audio and video will work as expected.

So, check if the date and time are set correctly. If not, set the correct time by following the below steps.

  • Step 01: Go to Settings
  • Step 02: Select General > Date & Time
  • Step 03: Toggle the slider to turn on the “Set Automatically” feature.

8. Turn off Noise Cancellation

The noise cancellation feature can also be the culprit to the FaceTime audio call not working issue. In this case, disabling this feature is the best solution. Here are the steps for doing so.

  • Step 01: Go to Settings
  • Step 02: Select Accessibility
  • Step 03: Choose the Audio/Visual option
  • Step 04: Toggle the slider to disable the “Phone Noise Cancellation” feature.

9. Reset FaceTime

FaceTime audio and video issues can also be fixed by re-enabling the application. First, disable FaceTime and then enable it after a few minutes. The below steps describe the process.

  • Step 01: Go to Settings
  • Step 02: Select FaceTime
  • Step 03: Toggle the slider to disable “FaceTime.” Then, wait for a few minutes.
  • Step 04: Reboot your iPad or iPhone
  • Step 05: Again, go to Settings > FaceTime. Next, toggle the slider to enable “FaceTime.”

10. Check the Network Settings

Are the above solutions not working? Try resetting your network settings. Be mindful that network settings will not delete any information or personal data when you reset the network.

So, don’t hesitate to do so. However, you will need to provide the passcode for cellular data, Wi-Fi, VPN, or other similar network settings.

  • Step 01: Go to Settings
  • Step 02: Choose General
  • Step 03: Tap on Reset > Reset Network Settings

11. Is FaceTime Down for Everyone?

Apple services often experience technical issues. So, such issues can happen when video calling your family and friends. During the technical errors, FaceTime stops working for everyone. In this case, you have nothing to do except wait.

You can learn the current status of Apple service by browsing the official website of Apple System Status. Moreover, this webpage alerts the users regarding the scheduled Downtime of FaceTime.

12. Is there More Participants in Your FaceTime Group than Required?

FaceTime groups support a particular number of participants in an audio or video call. But there are more participants in the call, FaceTime audio and video problems may occur.

It would always be best to start messaging one-to-one and adding more people to the group. At the same time, keep an eye on the number of participants, which should not exceed 32.

13. Update the Latest OS

When was the last time you updated your device OS?

Bugs or glitches often prevent apps like FaceTime from performing accurately. Updating your iPhone or iPad’s latest operating system can help you fix your device’s bugs or glitches. Whenever there is any OS update available for your device, consider updating.
