Rumor has it that Google plans to expand blur and translucency effects across Android 17’s interface, making it look somewhat like Apple’s Liquid Glass in iOS 26. Images of internal builds reviewed by 9to5Google reveal that semi-transparent and frosted-glass-style overlays will replace solid backgrounds on volume sliders, power menus, and system controls.
The updates build on the groundwork set with Android 16 QPR1, which was the first version to add blur effects to the notification and Quick Settings panels. The blur tints dynamically based on each user’s color theme for consistency, according to NotebookCheck.
Launched in June, Apple’s Liquid Glass is the company’s biggest visual and UI overhaul since iOS 7. Initially, there were issues with readability, performance (which I’m still struggling with on my MacBook Air), and contrast. Apple responded by toning down the effects in iOS 26.1, with toggles for “Clear” and “Tinted” glass aesthetics.
Reports describe Android 17’s blur as more subtle and restrained than Apple’s aggressive translucence. This careful approach could make Android more appealing if it updates the look while keeping it easy to use.
Android 17 launches in mid-2026. Google’s Pixel 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 lineups will receive the updates first, with Samsung flagships following in Q4 2026 or early 2027.
